In hardware, there is a kind of IC called FPGA or CPLD. It consists of a matrix of programmable logic cell and can be configured as a ASICs.

The concept is used in the Virtual Instrument. A large component container is developed to store virtual components and to form a virtual instrument component array. The array can be configured by interconnecting lines and switches between them.
